Professor Anjum Halai

Professor Anjum Halai is a Co-Investigator on AFLA. She is a Professor in education and head of research at the Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development, which has campuses in Pakistan and Tanzania.

From teaching at secondary school to her current work in graduate and post -graduate education, she has made a sustained contribution to the field of (mathematics) teacher education especially in the context of the developing world. Her research interests are in issues of social justice in classrooms settings with learners marginalized on the basis of language, gender, conflict or other forms of exclusion.

She has participated in major international research projects including the EdQual project with Bristol University UK and the ESRC/DFID funded research on ‘Engaging teachers in peacebuilding in conflict contexts’ with Sussex University UK. She works closely with the International Commission of Mathematical Instruction that has a special focus on capacity development in mathematics in technologically less developed countries. Anjum has her DPhil from Oxford University UK and sits on the editiorial board of the Oxford Review of Education.
